BookShelf allows you to download books from your own computer or directly from online book stores. The "Bookmarks" tab lists the available sites from which to download. In order to download books, tap the row for one of the sites, and browse down through the site's offerings until you find a book you wish to download.
Authentication
-
Some sites require you to login before you can access books. Others allow you to optionally login in order to gain access to additional features or to access books that you've purchased. The row which lists a particular site may have one of several icons on the right side which indicates its password requirements.
No password required
Password Optional
Valid password entered
Error connecting
Password is incorrect
In order to enter a password, tap on the key or warning icon, and a password (or username & password) entry screen will appear. If no password (or the wrong password) is entered for a site which requires a password, you'll be automatically shown the password entry screen if you tap to connect to the site.
Note that some sites require only a password (including ShelfServer) while others may require both a username (often your email address) as well as a password.
ShelfServer
-
In order to download your own ebook files from your computer, you use the free ShelfServer application which runs on your Mac, Windows, or Linux computer. Download ShelfServer from www.iphonebookshelf.com to get started. Once ShelfServer is running on your computer, a new entry should appear under the Near-by Shelves option on the Bookmarks tab. If you have set a password, you'll be prompted to enter it the first time you connect.
If you have any trouble finding your ShelfServer, please see the FAQ and the Videos section of the BookShelf website. Both pages include help for reconfiguring your system's firewall to allow ShelfServer through, including step-by-step video instructions to reconfigure Windows XP and Vista.
Progress
-
In-progress downloads will appear under the Downloads tab along with their current progress. When connected via the cellular network, books will download one at a time automatically until all downloads are complete. When connected via WiFi, books will download three at a time. Completed downloads move to the bottom of the status list and are automatically removed from the list after a few seconds if they completed successfully.
Failed downloads will show a Retry button and remain on the list until you tap the "Refresh" button in the upper left corner of the screen. Tapping the Retry button on a failed download will attempt to download the file again.
If you quit BookShelf (or if your phone rings) while downloads are in progress, the downloads will be automatically re-started the next time you launch BookShelf. Downloads will not be able to complete if BookShelf is not running since apps can't run in the background.
